I should add that in general, it is not sufficient to specify -pthread
only at link time.  So you may have to put the flag in CFLAGS and/or
CPPFLAGS as well; probably this is safe for C code:
  ./configure CPPFLAGS=-pthread LDFLAGS=-pthread
