I've been using non-recursive Makefiles with Automake in all of my
projects for some time now and it works fine. You have to use Automake
1.10, and there are a few bugs in make mostlyclean and make distclean that
it looks like were fixed in 1.10.1 (or at least some workaround code that
I had doesn't appear to be necesary any more).
