That is rather difficult to discern.  Either way, the
controlling program needs to say:
  "I was running this script:\n%s\nAND:\n%s"
which might get wrapped again by autoreconf (or not).

$ (echo 1; echo 2) | sed 1q
1

This is GNU/Linux  -- openSuSE 11.3
I think it is seeing "-q" on the command line.
