I cannot see how .. would ever refer to the source tree and since libhwmgmt.la is guaranteed to get created in the build tree this doesn't help in any way IMHO. The *abs* variants of various directories are indeed helpful in many situations for the build tree (i.e. when changing directory in a rule).
