The `Makefile.am` file one level higher is as follows.

               bootstrap.conf \
               FTL.TXT \

  BUILT_SOURCES = .version
  .version:
          echo $(VERSION) > $@-t && mv $@-t $@

  dist-hook:
          echo $(VERSION) > $(distdir)/VERSION.TXT

Looks pretty standard to me, but maybe I'm wrong.
