I think e.g. ATtiny15 could be operated from just one 1.5V battery
As other people seem to be taking this seriously,

"MSP430 Ultra-Low Power Microcontrollers
Simple 1.5 V Boost Converter for MSP430
A simple, efficient, low-cost, boost converter to take 1.5 V from a single
type-AA alkaline battery to the operating voltage required by the MSP430
family of ultralow-power microcontrollers is described. Expected battery
life is up to 1000 hours.

Of course the MSP430 DC/DC convert does have regulation, unlike the
ATtiny15 explosive
example. Convert works with anything, simple transistor based design.
