The issue is could be the transistor and driver circuit, the transistor could be just to slow! Get yourself a mosfet and give the gate pleanty of drive to ensure turning on speeds are kept, and be sure to pull the gate low whilst its not being driven to counteract the capacitance in the mosfet.
