Also tried /dev/ttyUSB1 and /dev/ttyS1 just in case. 

I have tried every programmer in avrdude.

I have just sniffed a some successful operations in win xp with usb snoopy but I really have no idea what I'm looking at.

Can you show the command line you use to run avrdude and the response?
