Hello
I am new to AVR programming. I bought the book "Embedded C programming
and the Atmel AVR". Can the C language taught in that book be used
with GCC or are there any differences one needs to be aware of?
Look at section 1.2, Introduction, second sentence:
"The chapter includes extensions to the C language that are a part of
the CodeVisionAVR C language."

So it probably cannot be used out of the box with GCC. You'll need to be
aware of the differences between the AVR GCC compiler and the CodeVision
compiler.
