      Here's the argument: It helps companies build non-free software on GCL 
    which might not
    ever be produced otherwise.

In and of itself, that is an undesirable consequence: more non-free
programs offer nothing to people who value their freedom, tempt others
to devalue their freedom so as to enjoy the practical benefits, and
make our community fall further behind.  Unless they somehow lead to
substantial contributions to GCL, they do not help free software.
