That's odd. NODE1.o is in layer21. I did not
change anything in layers21 and below.

Yes, it compiled for me with no problem. I have
a file called NODE1.o in mnt/linux/algebra.

Usual questions: Did you start from zero?
What linux flavor?
What kind of "blows up"?
