ok. I've created a new branch (axiom--solaris--1) to deal with the 
solaris porting effort. See http://arch.axiom-developer.org

I'll build a version of axiom on the latest GCL and if it successfully
compiles and completes tests you can download it and try it. Sometime
this week I'm going to try to get access to a solaris system and see
if I can work on the problem directly.
