[Axiom-developer] gcl configure breakage

I tried to configure gcl, which a collegue fetched yesterday via

svn co 
https://axiom.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/axiom/branches/build-improvements/gcl 
gcl

Unfortunately it (i.e., configure) fails
