OK, I understand. You're right, it was a bug. It's fixed, now, but I
suppose there is still some small risk that the fix is inadequate.

Got it. As time goes on I have been leaning away from having
environment variables control the actions of utilities. There are a
lot of gotchas with environment variables, in practice. Having a
--warn flag (or some other spelling) would be fine, though.
