Dude! acpi is a pretty big patch. The version that you are trying to 
patch, might simply be out-of-sync with 2.4.20. 

I fail to see how upgrading a kernel is harder than patching an old 
kernel.

Run 2.4.24 pal, or better yet 2.6.1. It's much smoother than trying to 
apply a HUGE patch to an OLD kernel.
