I don't know what could cause this, but I will try to
investigate it. Hopefully Daniel Jensen will wake up soon
and come to our rescue if I fail. :-)

That's no good! I just asked on #videolan, and someone told
me that the --rc-quiet option would do the trick.
Could you please try that fix by adding "--rc-quiet" to the
variable `bongo-vlc-extra-arguments'?

Hmm, I seem to remember that we've had this problem before.

Simply remove VLC from `bongo-enabled-backends'.
