I'd like to use the same credentials supplied to Anubis to connect on to the MTA. Failing that, I'd like Anubis to gather the credentials from a database (in my case, the same one it used for AUTH originally) and use

This sounds reasonable. However, I'm not quite sure about "Failing that"
clause. Do you mean that Anubis should try a second AUTH attempt with
other credentials if the first one has failed? Some servers (or system
administrators :^)) may regard this as an account probe and raise a
false alarm...

I agree with your objection - I phrased the original statement badly. I did not intend to suggest that Anubis tried to authenticate twice!

As one case, I'd like anubis to re-use the same credentials it accepted in the connection to the MTA. This will suffice to keep such data away from the rcfile.

I'd also like to consider the possibility of having Anubis lookup the MTA user/pass from the database, to get a different set of data. The idea being that you could have authid/passwd for Anubis, and MTAauthid/MTApasswd for the onward connection.

This second scenario will not likely to be very common - I doubt that I would use it myself, even.
