ok, but then that's my current line! it replaces a line with just a '\n';
I want to delete whole line, ie #lines=#lines.orig - 1, like 
sed "/[[:blank:]]*X-Anomy.*/d" does.

yep, see other reply, thanks. I suspected \\s was the case, reading just
[(s*)... in trace. All my msg had KEY text starting on col 1 so far, 
so did not notice it.
