That does work (I expect you meant `exit 1] , not 'exit 1').

It's the construct emitted by AS_EXIT.

Quite. It seems 'exit' without value always returns 0 for us, not $?.

bash-2.04$ foo=`exit 1` ||echo fail
bash-2.04$ foo=`(exit 1)` ||echo fail
bash-2.04$ foo=`(exit 1); exit` ||echo fail
bash-2.04$ foo=`{ (exit 1); exit; }` ||echo fail
bash-2.04$ exit

I'll report this to the port's maintainer.
