I agree for (ii), as systematic core cleaning may hide some big problems.
NB: I had a closer look and found 2 existing macros dealing with core
files `AC_FUNC_SETVBUF_REVERSED' and `AC_FUNC_UTIME_NULL'. Both of
them contains : `rm -f core core.* *.core'.
