Well, it is really weird.  It looks like your shell is unable to
handle arguments with embedded eol.

Please, try this:

        cd tests
        ./testsuite -d -x -v 3
        cd testsuite.dir/003
        PATH=../..:$PATH autoconf -d -v -f -t 'TRACE1:
        Hello world!'
