My shell is a recent bash, compiled from sources.  I'm not sure
which one, but I installed it within the last year, so I'd guess
2.05.  I've had the Mac a little over a year and it was the first
thing I installed, though I think I updated it after one of the OS
updates.  I'll check when I get home.

The installed /bin/sh is zsh 3.0.8, provided by Apple.  (This is
on Mac OS X, for people joining in progress.)
