Following up on Akim's message about 'expr', it does appear
that your BeOS 'expr' seems to be busted. Which expr is it?
Can you please try the following to help debug this?
I enclose the answers that I got on my box.
$ LC_ALL=C
$ export LC_ALL
$ expr X//1/3/// : 'X\(.*[^/]\)//*[^/][^/]*/*$'
//1
$ expr X//1/3/// : 'X\(.*[^/]\)/'
//1/3
$ expr X//1/3/// : 'X\(.*[^/]\)'
//1/3
$ expr X/ : 'X\(.*[^/]\)'
$ expr XY/ : 'X\(.*[^/]\)'
Y
$ expr --version
expr (GNU sh-utils) 2.0
