This is a followup to my previous message included below.  I've been
rebuilding the latest versions of several GNU packages over the weekend.
I've found that the configure scripts which were generated by autoconf
2.53a have the problem with $as_mkdir_p whereas configure scripts
generated by autoconf 2.53 and earlier do not.
