The Autoconf 2.54 manual says this in its introductory section
"The Autoconf Language":

        You must quote that text even when it is not passed as a macro
        argument:

             echo "Hard rock was here!  --[AC_DC]"

        which will result in

             echo "Hard rock was here!  --AC_DC"

This seems to address that the issue that you raised.  (Though the
example is quite dated from a musical point of view.  :-)

Perhaps there's another part of the Autoconf manual that gave you the
wrong impression about brackets and quoting?  If so, please let us
know so that we can improve the wording.
