Okay - then my misunderstanding...
The issue was that I downloaded a package - with uses autocon 2.52. I
made some changes to the configuration. Their instrictions said to
type "aclocal -Im4; automake -a ; autoconf" - I thought I could be
smart to use autoreconf -Im4....
I agree using ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS in Makefile.am is the right way to go...
