I found various reports in autoconf that the shell shipped with SunOS
has a serious bug in it which is tickled by configure scripts.
It doesn't appear to me that the autoconf developers have any intention
of changing the autoconf-generated output to avoid this bug. I don't
know if Sun released any patches to fix it before they gave up on SunOS
4.x altogether.
You might have better luck asking on that mailing list for more help,
but there's not much GNU make can do about this. Sorry about that :-/.
