I vaguely recall that this has been hacked on.  Can you reproduce
the problem with CVS autoconf (which is a pain to set up), or
with the latest test snapshot here?

Hello, I tried the previous version of autoconf, verified that the
configure script had been generated by autoconf-2.59b (as displayed in the first lines), but the result is the same. mbstate_t is not detected by the configure script which redefines its own, that conflicts with existing type (test done on MacOS X 10.2 with gcc-3.3).
