I'm afraid the answer to this question can get longer.

Perhaps this belongs to bug-automake list, rather than bug-autoconf, since
aclocal is part of the automake package.

But I'd be happy if we could discuss it on irc first.  I see you live
in the same timezone as I do.  I hang on irc.gnome.org, my nickname is
"kasal".

(I'd also be happy if the way autotools are used in Gnome converged to the
standard GNU way.)
