I suppose it depends on what one means by "work".  My own suggestion
would be for Autoconf to reject a "lex" implementation that does not
implement yyless correctly, as apparently was the case with flex
2.5.4.  The intent of that section of Autoconf, as far as I can tell
(Akim hasn't weighed in), is to check that an acceptable version of
"lex" is available.

Any fix in this area would be fairly low priority, I would think.
flex 2.5.4 dates back to when? 1997?  And flex 2.5.31 has been out
since 2003.  As a general rule, lex and yacc should be invoked only by
installers who have modified the source code; we can expect these guys
to be a bit more up-to-date than usual.
