Which port of the GNU tools is this?

Historically, cygwin outputs a *.stackdump file (instead of the Unix core
file) on crash. I'm guessing that you are using cygwin, but that you are
experiencing interference from a buggy third-party driver, which injects
threads into processes in such a way that cygwin can no longer emulate
fork. On the cygwin lists, this is referred to as
http://cygwin.com/faq/faq.using.html#faq.using.bloda

In which case, your problem is not with autoconf, but with your cygwin
installation, and you are probably better off seeking help from the cygwin
mailing list.
