Hmm, that's actually disconcerting; but thank you for the hint, that
solved my problem at least: Makefile.in rebuilding was skipped because
the needed automake version was not found, and the old Makefile.in never
caused m4_PACKAGE_YEAR to be defined.  (This was from a git tree.)
