Paul these are the same random failures I reported the other day.
The commonality is almost always a complaint about the diff between
.before and .after. concerning environment. I will look for your patch.

Samuel John has a clean install of OSX Lion + Command Line Tools for XCode-4.3.
I have the same setup, just not as clean. We both have 64bit computers.
He has tested on more than one (a mac mini and something else).
We have tested in and out of real directories, not /tmp or symlinked ones.
We have tried LC_ALL=C. We have tried "make -j 1 check".
I have tested simply by extracting, configure, make, make check, i.e. no
Homebrew, no setting CC or CXX or anything special.

The successful mac was a 32bit Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with XCode-4.2 + Unix Tools.

This still could be upstream because neither of us tested with the full
XCode-4.3.
I will be testing that today on a clean install of Lion.
