Update of sr #108144 (project autoconf):
Status: None => Wont Do
_______________________________________________________
Follow-up Comment #1:
The problem with trying to provide installation advice on missing prerequisite
libraries is that configure scripts are written to be portable to all sorts of
platforms, and there is no one canonical library name across all distros or
even other OS for missing functionality. Individual configure.ac authors may
try to provide better information, but such information is better encoded into
each configure.ac based on the actual libraries used by that package, rather
than trying to teach autoconf how to make completely-generic interfaces like
AC_CHECK_LIBS report on how to find missing libs. Also, your request sounds
something more like what pkg-config would be able to do than autoconf proper.
