Why to do this in the first place ?
At all, why to rely on shell scripting when Perl compiles on a gazillion of
platforms and doesn't even require root privileges in order to be installed ?
Furthermore, Perl is portable in the sense that properly compiled Perl tree can
be moved to another location and it will still work - it is by design
