Follow-up Comment #2, sr #110298 (project autoconf):
POSIX suggests that the test relies on unspecified (undefined?) behavior if
the output of the printf shell command is not properly encoded for the current
locale.
Have you tried running the test with LC_ALL="C" in the environment? If that
works around the problem, then we can set LC_ALL="C" for that test (we perhaps
need to do that anyway...).
