Follow-up Comment #2, sr #110417 (project autoconf):
Yes, you can write a patch to add a way to tell `sub update_file` not to
create backup files, and then wire that up to command line options in each of
the programs that use `update_file`. You need to start by patching
*Automake*, because the file that defines `update_file` is shared between the
two projects. Once your patch is committed in Automake, then you write a
second patch to update Autoconf's copy of FileUtils.pm and add the command
line options to Autoconf's programs.
