OK - that was the problem: There is an /usr/share/aclocal/gettext.m4.
Unfortunately /usr/local/bin/automake is not smart enough to conclude
GETTEXTM4=(topdir of gettext)/share/aclocal/gettext.m4 but searches
in its own topdir/share/aclocal/ (i.e. /usr/local/share/aclocal/) only :(((
