Automake 1.5: some notes for Makefile.am writers

Subject: Automake 1.5: some notes for Makefile.am writers

Dear Automake maintainers,

I have attached some notes on how to write `Makefile.am's and how not
to write them. Maybe some of these would fit well into Automake's
documentation. Also mentioned are some bugs or shortcomings of
Automake 1.5 (some of which have also been reported in my feedback
from 8 Sep 2001). Of course, these should get fixed, not documented
:-)

After initial difficulties, I have adapted my `Makefile.am's so that
Automake's dist* targets work as expected. However, I'd still like to
completely rewrite the Makefile commands for making distributions.
And there should be finer control over which subdirs to recurse into
for which target. I am still thinking about how to implement that.

Sincerely,

Christian Cornelssen
