Yeah, I noticed that later.

Pardon me if I'm just blind, but I didn't find any mentioning of that
mapping in automake.info.

Changing the ++'s to __'s and fixing the omission of _la_ in LDADD (which
had to be changed to LIBADD) fixed everything.
