automake 1.7.2 test failure: required2

I've tried to upgrade my Linux system.  (It is RedHat, but no
particular version; some things are upgraded, some are not.)

The script required2.test fails.  Namely, the command

        $AUTOMAKE --add-missing --copy 2>stderr

succeeds, even though it's expected to fail.
(I tried to run ./required2.test separately.)

Versions:
libtool-1.4.2-3
autoconf-2.57-0
automake-1.7.1-0

This information is probably incomplete, please tell me what you need.
