Reproducing by invoking the following simple command in a subdirectory
under top build one. Replacing actual value with `$(top_builddir)' in
output.
bash> mv Makefile{,-b};make -f Makefile{-b,};ls -l Makefile
make[1]: Entering directory `$(top_builddir)'
make[1]: Leaving directory `$(top_builddir)'
ls: Makefile: No such file or directory
