At least two of a) automake, b) the automake manual and c) the DejaGnu
example need changing. But currently I don't know which two. I guess
you're suggesting a) and c).

No, I'm suggesting that someone needs to analyze the situation,
as I haven't done so (yet).  ;-)

Well, my analysis I've already given, and I suggest changing the automate manual and DejaGnu example, since it's simpler and less problematic than changing any code. If the automake maintainers are happy, then I'll submit a patch for the manual, and then take it up with the DejaGnu maintainers.
