help for failing 'kill'

Would someone be so kind as to point me at an online resource that
describes the circumstances under which a bash 'kill pid' would fail
even though it reports success?

One of our scripts derives a pid using ps and grep and then
invokes 'kill pid'.

We've checked that pid is correct and the kill returns as successful
but the process continues merrily along.

Forgive me if this seems trivial for this forum but it's causing us
much consternation.

I'd be happy to post the script extract if someone would find it useful.

Thanks in advance
