This has nothing to do with whether or not a machine has a floppy drive.
/dev/fd is a mechanism which maps open file descriptors into the file
system.
If the /dev/fd directory does not exist, bash emulates it internally.
I don't have any HP machines, but running `make tests' for
versinfo: 2 04 0 1 release rs6000-ibm-aix4.2.1.0
runs without errors.
