Type C-r cat C-r C-r C-r C-r ...
and you'll see all the instances of cat, normal.
But let's say somewhere along the way you want to neaten the screen
with C-l:
Type C-r cat C-r C-r C-l C-r C-r C-r C-r ...
You notice how it 'gets stuck' and doesn't show further cat instances.
This actually is a symptom of:
