How about
"Display all 311 possibilities? (y or n)"
offering more choices than (y or n), e.g. "t" for list by modification
time, "r": list by reverse modification time.  Indeed, reverse
modification time would be a great option in general, as one would
often would be most be interested in seeing the latest files at the
end of the list still visible on a small screen.

As the choices increase, no harm in adding a "?" to explain them and
mention other related customizable features.
