bug in sort command

sirs,
sub:improper functioning of sort -n command
    -----------------------------------------
our education centre functions in a linux environment.I find that the -n option 
of the sort command is not working properly.whenever we type a list of numbers 
and we wish to have it sorted,we find to our utter dismay that the sorting is 
not taking place properly.I wish to know the reason for it.
