If I'm feverishly hitting C-r and --oops-- just passed what I wanted.
I can use C-s ... but then what should I set stty stop to? Given that
my brain is already habituated to gnu emacs's key bindings, I might as
well change several of the stty settings while I'm at it.

OK, what should one do to stty to make it less conflicting to
emacs users? here's what the default is on my machine:

speed 38400 baud; rows 33; columns 97; line = 80;
intr = ^C; quit = ^\; erase = ^?; kill = ^U; eof = ^D; eol = <none>;
eol2 = <none>; start = ^Q; stop = ^S; susp = ^Z; rprnt = ^R; werase = ^W;
lnext = ^V; flush = ^O; min = 1; time = 0;
