xterm escape sequence problem

I have the following in my .bashrc:

 PS1="address@hidden \w] "
if [ $TERM = xterm ]
# see http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Xterm-Title.html
export PS1="\033]2;address@hidden:address@hidden \w] "

This displays the prompt as I expect it, but sometimes the prompt gets
mangled, for example when using the up arrow to browse through the
history or using backspace to edit the command I just typed. I'm not
sure what the problem is here. It is probably an xterm problem, but
I can't figure out what it is. Is the PS1 string output each time the
up arrow is typed? Does anyone else have examples of xterm escape
sequences that work?

address@hidden ~] xterm -version
